Happy New Year!
With back-to-back assignments every day last month, I hope we can keep this momentum going through the rest of the year. I love it. Gotta stay busy.
The month began with the retirement of three people in our newsroom; Jack Lail, Mary Constantine and Michael Patrick. Two weeks later several people throughout the building (including two in our newsroom) were laid off. At the end of the month our executive editor Jack McElroy retired, as did our cartoonist, Charlie Daniel, who had been with the newspaper for 60 years. None of these positions will be replaced besides the executive editor position.
To top it all off, Digital First Media, the angel of death in the newspaper industry, made an unsolicited bid to purchase Gannett, the company that owns the KNS as well as 100 other papers in the country.
While that bid has since been rejected by the company, it’s been a tumultuous month to say the least. I love my job, and I still look forward to coming to work every day. But many days prove challenging when it seems all odds and everyone is against you. In the end, I still wouldn’t give up photojournalism for anything.
