Just Relax!

Just Relax!

“Calvin, you need to learn to sit down and relax!” my mom repeated to me several times over winter break. As I paced through the house, back and forth, fidgeting with my fingers and my mind racing with ideas, I was begging for an excuse to get out of the house.“Relaxation” is a foreign concept to me. I could be doing something right now, my mind says.

During winter break I photographed some assignments for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as I do every vacation. After shooting an assignment I was often searching for my own personal photo opportunities. If I was not chasing the moon I was chasing the sun or the fog. There’s nothing quite like running through the single-digit temperatures with a camera, unable to feel your face and fingers, to be rewarded by returning to your warm car with a few photos.

Perhaps one day I will begin to appreciate my free time, but until then I will continue fidgeting for something to do.
